Tiffany – your question is a great one because it concerns many people as we approach the holidays. I have the following suggestions:
• Choose some behavior that you will be able to maintain during the holidays such as eating slowly, drink 8 cups of water each day and keep up an exercises routine.
• Be diligent about keeping your journal and write down every morsel that passes your lips – no matter what it is!
• Never attend a social gathering hungry. Eat a snack before you go and make sure that you don’t skip meals beforehand, especially a high quality breakfast. At the function, try eating protein first then fill up on vegetables. You may be able to take your own dish or at least find out what they will be serving so that you are better prepared. Talk a lot because if you are talking you are not eating! Wearing a snug belt reminds me to control my eating and sucking a cough drop beforehand makes the food less appealing.
• Avoid creating feelings of deprivation by planning some modest treats that you fill confident in controlling.
• At the end of each day mentally review your successes for the day.
• Above all – maintain a positive attitude.
